United States Sailing Champions Championship heads to New Jersey

BRICK, NJ (October 5, 2022) – From this Friday, 20 teams will be in the water for the 48e US Sailing Championship of Champions, presented by Risk Strategies Gowrie Group, at Shore Acres Yacht Club in Brick, New Jersey. The races will take place from October 7 to 9, 2022 and will be contested in the MC Scow.

The championship, first held in 1976, invites coxswains winning one-design National, North American or World Championships to compete in a one-design fleet racing regatta to determine which class has the ultimate champion. 20 different one-design classes will be represented, from Buccaneer to Lightning.

Names to watch include David Stark (Amherst, NY), who is coming off a narrow victory at the 2022 Lightning World Championship. Starck also finished third at the 2021 Lightning North American Championship. He will sail with Jody Starkwinner of the 2021 Lightning Women’s North American Championship and runner-up in the 2021 Lightning Atlantic Coast Championship.

Bill Draheim (Royse City, TX) will bring a wealth of experience to the MC Scow fleet. Draheim received his invitation to the Champions Championship by winning the MC Scow Masters National Championships.

This year’s guests won their respective championships between August 22, 2021 and August 15, 2022. Competitors can choose to sail double-handed or single-handed, as long as their total weight is under 320 pounds and start and finish the event with the same number of crews. US Sailing would like to thank Title Sponsor Gowrie Group and National Sponsors Gill Marine and Regatta Craft Mixers for their support of this event.
